The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council known as the BBSRC, is the UK’s principal funder of bioscience research and innovation in the life sciences. It is one of the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI)’s seven research councils, and funds world-class bioscience research to promote economic growth, improve quality of life, and address global challenges such as food security, health, and sustainability.
The BBSRC invests in areas such as agriculture, biotechnology, genomics, and bioinformatics, and their mission is to advance knowledge and deliver impact in agriculture, health, and biotechnology. Their vision is to advance the frontiers of biology and drive towards a healthy, prosperous and sustainable future.
BBSRC works with partners and stakeholders to across five national Research and Innovation Campuses, centred around eight institutes that receive strategic funding from BBSRC, and Rothamsted is proud to be a BBSRC campus. The campuses are each distinct, at a different stage of maturity and with a different bioscience focus area, unique flagship facilities and a diverse range of support, such as accelerator programmes. With a strong geographical spread across the UK, the institutes provide national capability, in the form of a critical mass of world-leading expertise and long-term programmes of research in strategically important areas.
