We were delighted to welcome Fiachra Sweeney and delegates from Nucleate to the Rothamsted Campus this week for a visit focused on collaboration, shared ambition, and supporting the next generation of bio-innovators in agritech and the life sciences.
Nucleate is a global, non-profit organisation dedicated to empowering early-career researchers to translate scientific discoveries into impactful biotechnology companies. Through its flagship Accelerate programme, Nucleate provides founders with mentorship from experienced industry leaders, training in company formation, access to investors, and a strong international peer network. Operating across leading research institutions and biotech hubs worldwide, Nucleate plays a key role in strengthening the pipeline from academic research to real-world application.
The visit began with an introduction to Rothamsted Research and the wider Rothamsted Campus. Freddie Theodoulou highlighted Rothamsted’s unique combination of historic scientific assets and world-class contemporary research capabilities, while Nicole Sadd outlined the campus innovation ecosystem and its role in supporting spin-outs, start-ups, and collaborative research.
Nucleate shared insights into their global community and the structure of the Accelerate programme, prompting discussions around how Rothamsted’s facilities, expertise, and networks could complement Nucleate’s founder-focused support model—particularly for researchers working in agritech, sustainability, and plant and soil sciences.
Members of the campus community also contributed to the discussion. Leigh Credland from FA Bio, Daniel Bahia from Pherosyn, and Nicolas Kral from Phytoform showcased their innovative work, reflected on the value of being based at Rothamsted, and highlighted opportunities for collaboration with both Nucleate and fellow campus organisations.
The visit concluded with tours of key campus facilities, including the greenhouses and controlled-environment facilities with Fiona Gilzean, and the internationally renowned Soil Archive with Andy Gregory, demonstrating the depth of resources available to support research-led innovation.
The day sparked excellent conversations, meaningful connections, and clear synergies for future collaboration. We look forward to building on these relationships and working with Nucleate to support early-career researchers and bio-innovators as they translate science into impact.
