What is Rothamsted Enterprises?

Rothamsted Enterprises is committed to upholding and promoting a sustainable agenda that is fundamentally integrated into the framework of our organisation. As a part of the world-renowned scientific research institute Rothamsted Research, we are passionate about affecting climate change and feeding the world’s growing population in a sustainable way. We are dedicated to sustainable development (meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs), in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Concern for the environment is an integral part of this commitment. One of our key objectives is to reduce the impact on the environment from our operations, and to support our clients, tenants, and partners in doing the same.

This policy applies to activities taking place in all Rothamsted Enterprises properties, professional activities across the whole portfolio, and the management of the company. The policy relates to all staff activities, including off-site meetings and external partnerships. We aim to follow and promote good sustainability practice; to reduce environmental impact for all our clients and community users.

This Policy aims to:

  • Ensure that we are compliant with all legal obligations under the current Environmental Protection Act, together with all other applicable statutory provisions and relevant codes of practice. Our aim to exceed standard code of practice for the sector.
  • Establish environmental and business objectives that are in line with the context and strategic direction of Rothamsted Enterprises and address any associated risk.
  • To integrate sustainability considerations into all business decisions and consider the environmental concerns and impacts of all decision making and activities.
  • To ensure staff are aware of our Environmental and Sustainability Policy and are committed to implementing and improving it.
  • To understand, and mitigate/ minimise where possible, the impacts of Rothamsted Enterprises’ activities on the environment and on the local community.

  • In 2023 Rothamsted Research created a campus wide sustainability group to co-ordinate our campus approach to Net Zero. Rothamsted Enterprises forms part of this wider process, however, will also include more actions around tenants and venue users to create a strong sustainability culture and to reduce carbon reduction.
  • We are proud members of Agri-Tech E, The Hertfordshire Innovation Quarter Enterprise Zone and The Hertfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP). Our collective focus is on clean and green growth, transforming food production, artificial intelligence, and the data economy. We support our members, colleagues, and partners to deliver the priorities above by enabling opportunities for collaboration and forging links between them to translate innovative ideas into products and services, which maintain a green approach.
  • Rothamsted Enterprises pledge to invest in high performing assets, such as our BREEAM ‘Excellent’ accredited Conference Centre and Innovation Hub. As we expand our portfolio, and refurbish current assets, we will continue to sustainability assess thought-out planning, building and operational phases ensuring our portfolio achieves highly across the built environment lifecycle; from construction to in-use.
  • We manage our spaces, future development projects, and work with the rest of the site and our partners to maintain ecological diversity and conservation value. Our funding streams reflect our corporate sustainable agenda.
  • We are committed to renewable energy. We seek to maximise the proportion from renewable energy sources, whilst also supporting investment in new renewable energy schemes. We reduce the energy consumption of office, catering, and lab equipment by purchasing energy efficient equipment and promoting good housekeeping.
  • We promote the efficient use of materials and resources throughout our facility including, particularly, those that are non-renewable. Where renewable options cannot be sourced, other options, such as using local suppliers to reduce the carbon footprint of long-distance travel, are sourced.
  • We control our waste management and recycling activities to ensure that all wastes are disposed of in a safe and responsible manner. We are always looking for new ways to manage our waste, including working with our tenants and partners on experimental solutions. We ultimately aim to reduce waste through re-use and recycling and by purchasing recycled, recyclable, or re-furbished products and materials where these alternatives are available, economical and suitable.
  • Rothamsted Enterprises are committed to working with ethical, sustainable and, (where practical) local suppliers, whilst not compromising product quality. We are devoted to reducing or removing as many single use plastics from our operation as possible, and annually review our suppliers to ensure we are sourcing the best possible option. All our takeaway containers are biodegradable/ compostable and/or re-usable. Most are also made from natural materials. We ensure that and timber furniture purchases, and any other timber products are recycled or from well- managed, sustainable sources and are Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified. When considering supplier changes management will make smart environmental/ evidentiary based supplier decisions- aiming for low carbon impact.
  • When sourcing our food and beverage suppliers, we strive to source locally. We use ungraded vegetables, reducing pesticide usage. We pledge to promote vegan and vegetarian options and continue to review and reduce the number of our suppliers; thereby reducing carbon emissions. We purchase fair-trade and/or organic beverages.
  • We minimise the impact on sustainability of all office and transportation activities. We encourage the use of public transport to attend meetings, site visits etc., apart from in circumstances where the alternatives are impractical and/or cost prohibitive. Our environmental travel plan aims to find ways to reduce the traffic to and from site. We include the full costs of more sustainable forms of transport and parking solutions in our financial and development proposals.
  • We avoid physically travelling to meetings etc. where alternatives are available and practical, such as using teleconferencing, video conferencing, remote desktop or web cams, and efficient timing of meetings to avoid multiple trips. These options are also often more time efficient, while not sacrificing the benefit of regular contact with clients and partners.
  • Rothamsted Enterprises promote and support the work of Rothamsted Research and that of our tenants. In addition to our approach to sustainability, we support a wide range of tenant businesses on our campus, working across a range of innovations to improve climate change and food security.
  • We are committed to making clients and suppliers aware of our policies and encouraging them to adopt sound sustainable management practices. We are passionate about ensuring environmental best practice is implemented at a local level. We offer tools and advice to help our clients and facilities users to make green choices, in the run up to, and day of, their event/s.
  • We respond promptly and effectively to environmental incidents and implement appropriate corrective actions. We do not compromise on health and safety.
  • Rothamsted Enterprises continue to look for and invest in opportunities and partnerships where we are able to promote our guiding principle of innovation and educate the community about sustainable options.

Measure and review

  • By raising awareness of environmental issues, and training staff in best practice we can continue to ensure effective and sustainable resourcing.
  • We review performance reports annually and continue to strive to improve our sustainability performance.
  • Where performance review indicates that we have fallen short of our targets, or a practical sustainable option cannot be found, we will always look to offsetting the deficit in other areas of the business.
  • Rothamsted Enterprises will continually develop our objectives and targets to reduce environmental impact through the application of measurable and achievable performance indicators.
