About this event

Make your own bee hotel at this year’s summer crafting week at Rothamsted!

Our bees are facing an unprecedented crisis. They’ve lost much of their natural habitat in the past 60 years – including 97% of wildflower-rich meadows. And they’re under assault from pesticides, intensive farming and climate change. But by creating bee-friendly spaces where we live, we can start to replace and restore some of this lost habitat and help Britain bloom for bees.

Using a variety of materials, kids will be given the chance to create their own fabulous Bee Hotel to take home and hang up outside.

We recommend this activity can be done by children aged 2+ and that early years children will require some adult supervision

In addition to making their own bee hotel, children can also enjoy the following:

  • Make their own headband
  • Add a special message to our ‘tree of life’
  • Learn about bees and the flowers that attract them with our age appropriate quizzes, word searches and colouring sheets
  • Outdoor games on the lawn outside our café
  • Go on a wildflower hunt in our café garden. Follow our guided sheet to find and learn about the flowers we have around us.

Event Format
The main segment of this event takes place within the Fowden Hall in Rothamsted Conference Centre. Guests will have their own crafting table which is not shared with any other groups. The tables are spaced to allow for social distancing. After the crafting is complete, we encourage our young guests to head outside to add a message to our ‘tree of life’, and play games on our lawn, and perhaps enjoy some delicious refreshments from our café.

We allow 1.5 hours per table for crafting activities.  Please arrive on time for your session. If you are early, please feel free to visit our café which is open from 9am – 3pm.

Our café will be open for refreshments.

Please note that we do not offer child-care services. Each table of children must have a responsible adult with them at all times. Our staff are available to advise, but will not be able to care for children, and must keep distant at all times. We thank you for your understanding and co-operation.

Coronavirus and social distancing
We are proud to have earnt the industry standard ‘We’re Good to Go’ from Visit Britain.  It means we have implemented the Government’s COVID-19 guidance, understand the guidance from Public Health England and have a COVID-19 Risk Assessment in place.

  • Our staff wear PPE at all times
  • All visitors to the conference centre are always required to wear face coverings, unless seated for eating or drinking
  • Hand sanitiser stations are placed throughout the venue
  • We have implemented a robust cleaning regime ensuring high touch points are cleaned after every use and rooms are cleaned down after each occupancy
  • We have an automated entry and exit point for conference centre and café users, and a large, well-ventilated plaza area where our reception is based
  • We ensure staggered arrival, minimal cross over with other groups and minimal interaction with staff
