Rothamsted campus company Phytoform has announced a new international collaboration with Beck’s, the third-largest seed brand in the United States, and leading global seed breeder RAGT to develop next-generation corn traits using its proprietary AI-powered gene tuning platform, CRE.AI.TIVE™.
The collaboration will initially focus on optimising whole-plant corn architecture to improve harvestable yield and productivity in key agricultural markets, including the United States, South America and potentially Europe.
By combining Phytoform’s AI-driven gene tuning technology with Beck’s commercial seed expertise and RAGT’s global breeding programme, the partnership aims to accelerate the development of improved corn varieties that help growers produce more while using resources more efficiently.
Unlike traditional transgenic approaches, Phytoform’s technology works by making highly targeted edits to a plant’s native DNA, enabling breeders to fine-tune how genes are expressed without introducing foreign genetic material. This precision approach allows new traits to be developed while aligning with evolving regulatory and market preferences.
The collaboration has been in development for some time, bringing together organisations with complementary expertise. Beck’s identified a complex breeding challenge where Phytoform’s unique AI-powered technology could provide a new solution, combining advanced computational biology with decades of plant breeding experience.
Will Pelton, CEO of Phytoform, said:
“This collaboration demonstrates how AI can help unlock a new level of precision in crop improvement. By enabling targeted tuning of native gene expression, CRE.AI.TIVE™ gives breeders a powerful new way to address specific agronomic challenges while working within existing elite germplasm.”
Speaking about the wider significance of the partnership, Will added:
“This is an exciting example of how we can leverage artificial intelligence alongside modern genetics to develop better-performing crops while supporting a more sustainable future for agriculture.”
Nicole Sadd, CEO of Rothamsted Enterprises, said: “Phytoform’s success reflects the strength of the innovation ecosystem we have built here at Rothamsted. Seeing Will and his team reach this milestone is incredibly rewarding, and we are proud to have supported their journey. Partnerships such as this demonstrate how bringing together innovative businesses, world-leading science and the right facilities can accelerate technologies that have the potential to make a real difference to global agriculture.”
Corn is one of the world’s most widely grown crops, and improving its yield, resilience and productivity remains a major focus for the agricultural sector. The collaboration highlights the increasing role of artificial intelligence in accelerating crop innovation and delivering practical solutions for growers worldwide.
Phytoform, based at Rothamsted Campus, develops genetic solutions for a more sustainable food system by combining artificial intelligence with precision gene editing. The company works with leading seed companies and agri-food organisations across multiple crop species, translating scientific innovation into commercially relevant products.
Congratulations to the Phytoform team on this significant milestone. We look forward to seeing the impact this international collaboration will have on the future of sustainable agriculture.
