At Rothamsted Enterprises, we’re passionate about engaging with the next generation around food, farming, and sustainability. That’s why we were thrilled to once again support the Hertfordshire Schools Food and Farming Day – now in its fourth successful year. This year’s event was our biggest yet, welcoming over 1,300 enthusiastic primary school children for a fun and educational day out.
A highlight of the day was a very special guest—Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Edinburgh GCVO, who took the time to speak with both young visitors and exhibitors. Her interest in the work being done across the event, especially around sustainability, was warmly received and appreciated by everyone involved.
Adding a unique twist to the day, our talented Head Chef, Jez Beasley, baked cricket cookies, which proved to be a real crowd-pleaser. Many children were both intrigued and delighted by the idea of edible insects, and the cookies sparked some great conversations around future food sources and sustainable eating.
Jez shared his thoughts on the day:
“I loved being part of the Herts Schools Food and Farming Day. The children were really interested in sustainability – there was lots of interaction and they were great fun. It was a pleasure to meet The Duchess of Edinburgh, who asked about the work going on at Rothamsted and our sustainability initiatives.”
We’re proud to be a part of this fantastic initiative and grateful to all who helped make the day a success—especially Sarah Moreland and all the organising team.
Here’s to inspiring even more young minds at next year’s event!
