The Russell Building, on the Rothamsted Research campus in Harpenden, Hertfordshire, was constructed between 1914 and 1918 and was officially opened in 1919. It originally housed the soil laboratories and was later used as the Institute’s administrative offices and library.
Over one hundred year’s later, the Russell Building continues to be a vibrant and dynamic R&D hub – where agri-tech visionaries turn cutting edge scientific research into practical, workable solutions.
Office space and hot-desking are available in the Russell Building. If you are an agri-tech business, or are part of the community that works closely with agri companies and clients, why not consider joining our campus.
Building information
The Russell Building was newly renovated during 2020, and opened in 2021. It offers office space in a beautiful historic building, bathed in natural light and period features.
Our attractive open plan meeting and social spaces are designed to promote collaborative discussions and encourage the exchange and development of ideas.
The building is on the Rothamsted Research campus, and includes:
- A permanently staffed reception desk
- Water, heating, and electric
- Wi-Fi and wired connectivity to the internet
- Car-parking
- Printing facilities
- Regular office cleaning
- Lockers
- Clean and modern kitchen facilities, with free tea and coffee
- On-site café serving breakfast, lunch, drinks and snacks
- On-site conference centre available for meetings and events of any size
Leasing
Whether you are a start-up, a spin-out, an SME looking for grow-on space, or a larger organisation within the agri-tech arena, we have flexible space to support you as you grow. We have spaces available on a long-lease basis for the following sizes:
- 1-10 people
- 10 – 30 people
- 30 – 60 people
- 60 – 100 people
- 100 – 200 people
Businesses who lease with us also receive:
- 30% discount in the restaurant
- 20% discount in the conference centre

Hot-desking
We are delighted to be able to offer hot-desking at the Russell Building. Open from Monday-Friday, 8am-5.30pm, you can now enjoy the wonderful range of modern facilities for a set fee.
Pricing is on a daily or monthly basis, as follows:
- Daily:
£25 +VAT - Monthly, no fixed desk, up to 8 times:
£175 +VAT - Monthly, fixed desk, unlimited use:
£300 +VAT
